Ombuarchitecture put together this video (alphabetically) of well-known architects and a signature building project. I was disappointed that I was not listed under ‘H’…. Maybe next year!

We have been fortunate to have developed several projects for the Salvation Army. Here is a quick video update on the status of a bunkhouse building for one of their Northern Minnesota camps. What is unique about this project is that we needed to also have the building function as a storm shelter. We do get severe weather and possible tornado’s or high winds and this will be the safe haven for the entire camp. Take a look!
When getting dressed in the morning I make sure my clothes are clean and that my belt matches my shoes (generally). The whole ensemble is decided in a matter of seconds. I just don’t have the patience or desire to dedicate more time then that on silly things… Hmmm…
Why not spend that time studying, for sometimes hours, how a stair railing engages the stair? Or detailing over and over transitions of various materials to help define emotion, color, light, -leading from one space to the next? These are the important things! At least to us architects. Nothing is arbitrary in design. It is an intense internal study that then explodes out to create, in essence, functional art.
Take a simple box for example. How would you get access to it’s inside? Most of you might just take the top off right? To us, it can be so much more…

One man’s trash is truly another man’s treasure in this video by Evan Burns. ‘Collector’ Vince Hannemann spent years building his Cathedral of Junk in Austin, Texas. Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder and I think it is beautiful and amazing. Take a look and let me know what you think.

We get to create some fun things! A Client asked us to design a mailbox to go along with the home we designed for them. This video shows a bit of that process. Take a look!
Here is a video describing the Fundamentals of Design, primarily focusing on branding. It is a great little synopsis of what we as architects think about but on a more grand and complex scale.

Fascinating video reminiscing on the space age impact on architecture. 1950’s California diners led the way. Googie Architecture is the term coined for this ‘Futurism through Modernism’ movement. Take a look!

It was awesome to be part of the Design Team and help the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization create a new educational and office facility. This past weekend was the Grand Opening. I gave building tours, ate cookies, and meet a ton of great people. Below is a video put together of the event by John Akre of the Minneapolis Television Network. We appreciate him taking the time to document the day!
And if you want to see some of the landscape features in action, check out this video by MWMO showing that ‘Green is Not and Afterthought’.
‘Dynarchitecture'(dynamic architecture) – yes, I just made that up – is the mix of technology and architecture that allows a space to be transformed by the push of a button. This theater was created for the 2012 Yeosu EXPO in Korea by the Hyundai Motor Group. The walls are built with moving cubes that truly become the theater’s main performance.

This mini documentary by Philip Bloom is both tragic and encouraging. The Ponte Tower, an iconic building in Johannesburg, fell from grace and is fighting to be reborn. The design is interesting with a central circular courtyard that became a depressing garbage pile and that let residents only connect to the world through a small portion of the sky. How does architecture affect social status, race relations, emotional being, daily life, etc.? Check out the video.

Here is another update of a fun residential project we are working on. Things are moving fast because winter is coming and the contractor wants to get it enclosed. Take a look!
