Barn Raising – Timelapse

Scott Miller received permission from this Amish community to document a traditional barn raising. He took one photo every 20 seconds via a timer remote on his camera totaling 1600 images. Scott photographed from 7 AM to 5 PM. Even with a lunch break, the amount of work completed over this 10 hour period is amazing!

The Nest Thermostat

Our thermostat died and man it was cold! I decided to install the ‘Nest’. It is beautifully crafted and easy to install and use. It connects to your wi-fi and will send you email reports, let you control it via your phone and more! Below is a quick video of the install and my impressions.

Podcast #37 – Spray Foam Insulation

Scott-GloweIt had been a while since my last video discussion with Scott Glowe of St Croix Insulation. We are specifying more and more spray foam insulation in our projects and thought it would be great to have a conversation with Scott about the product. Some off the things we discuss are:

-What is spray foam insulation?
-How does it compare to other types of insulation?
-How is it applied and in what applications?
-What are the costs and benefits of spray foam insulation?

Feel free to contact Scott through his website or via email at scott@stcroixinsulation.com

Textile Design

I am fascinated by the people and processes relating to the ‘tools’ of my architectural trade. Heidi Winge Strom is a textile designer that strives to create a multi-sensorial experience of our environment through her work. It’s great to get some ‘behind the scenes’ video to hear and see the care Heidi has for textiles and how they can enhance our projects.

The Art of Drawing

I’ll admit it. The one thing I could never do very well is draw people. Buildings, landscapes, no problem -but people… not so much. I don’t know if the human form is too complex or intimidating for me to capture so I am always amazed when someone can make it look easy. Take a look at this video of Dave de Leeuw making me envious.

DIY Design – Coat Rack

DIY Design – Coat Rack

You always need some place to hang coats, hats, back packs, etc. in your entryway. Everything I saw had a traditional look or used the typical hooks and was frankly, uninspiring. Here is one I made using some scrap birch and walnut with some brass/steel rod. It was very simple to put together and has a clean, modern look. Click on the images to enlarge.
